I have been making more of any effort this summer to get out and about while skirted. It’s been fun and is amazing how you get more comfortable with practice. Mine are pretty basic – 5-pocket Demi mini and an above the knee Khaki one so looks like shorts unless someone is really paying attention. No negative comments but several smiles from the ladies.
I agree that it gets easier with practice. You become more confident as you repeat the positive experience of going out without anything bad happening.
My experience has been similar to yours in that the ladies seem to take notice, but the men tend to ignore it.
I wear skirts in public because I choose too. Freedom of choice, expression and individuality apply to all not just women and I therefore make a stand.
In my early days I did feel self conscious but that soon goes the more you do it. Wear what you want with confidence. Never appear uncomfortable. I get many, many compliments. Most interact with me as they would if I were in trousers. Yes some ignore me but then some ignore me when in trousers. Many are ignored by others for a variety of reasons. Nobody is perfect in the eyes of another.
They are far better than trousers in many ways.
I absolutely agree with you! Men shouldn’t be restricted in their freedom of choice, expression or any other aspect of their personality just because of their gender.
The more you go out in public, the more confident you feel and, as you said, confidence is absolutely key to pulling off an unusual outfit. That is exactly what my experience has been as well. It’s simply a matter of practice!
I try and wear my skirts out as often as I can. I guess I am at the age where I don’t really care what other people think, especially other guys. As long as I go around with confidence and go about doing my business, then no one will really pay much attention to it. The ladies are always complimentary and that can make me feel good.
The most funny remarks I get when I wear my 4″ heels is how can I walk in those shoes?? That comment comes from a lot of older women who are no longer able to walk in heels anymore and they are just jealous that I can. Younger ladies compliment me but would probably never wear heels themselves. Like wearing skirts, if you carry yourself with confidence no one will really feel that critical of you. The one place I do feel some uneasiness about wearing “abnormal” clothing is on public transit. You just never know what kind of crazys are also riding the train.
Not caring what other people think is exactly the right approach. Confidence is absolutely key pulling off unusual fashion choices in public and I’m really happy to hear that you can wear skirts and heels so confidently outside.
I love wearing heels as well, but I don’t wear them as much as skirts because I find them too impractical in a lot of situations even if I love the way they look and feel, although I do wear them a lot when I’m indoors (even at the office).
I agree with your evaluation of public transit. For some reason, it attracts a lot of strange people. The only negative comment I’ve had while wearing a skirt in public was by a homeless man at the main train station in Munich, Germany, so there is certainly something to public transit being odd.
I wear my skirts almost all the time, at home and in public. The only time I am not in a skirt is when I am on my motorcycle. The other day I wore shorts and it felt a little weird. Once I became comfortable wearing my skirts in public I don’t want to wear anything else.
Shorts make a lot more sense than a skirt for a motorcycle! It’s awesome that you’re so comfortable in public wearing skirts!
Hi guys, I always (and only) wear a skirt in public, since about 2 years
That is really amazing that you do that!
I like to wear my skirt or kilt as much as possible in public. I hardly wear pant or shorts anymore but sometimes like to change up my fashion choices. I started wear skirts about a year ago after a hot and humid summer. Also I had prostate surgery and due to bladder leakage issues it was more practical to wear a skirt in case I had to void my urine. I’m 66 and at the point that I don’t care what people think of my wardrobe. I get my toenails painted so when I wear flip flops in public or to yoga and my wife are in public view. I also wear thongs and g-strings to the beach for swimwear, so I’m used to pushing the fashion boundaries. But there are some situations where I don’t wear a skirt around certain groups of friends and family that I feel uncomfortable around in a skirt. There have been times that while out in public I have run into friends or family wearing a skirt, for the most part they don’t make comment. I have had a lot of positive versus few negative comments by folks in public.
Skirts are definitely better for hot and humid days! It sounds like your experience in public has been overwhelmingly positive which is really great! I haven’t run into anyone I know while out in a skirt yet, but I’m sure it will happen eventually. Other than some of my more distant family in arch-conservative parts of the southern United States, my entire family and group of friends know about my skirt-wearing, so it won’t be a big deal when I do happen to run into someone.
Hmmm… Tried to vote or see results but get a “Cannot verify referrer” response! Anyway, I would have voted “Often.” There are tasks where a skirt is not a suitable choice, like when working under a car, or up on a ladder for roofing repairs; but for most daily activities, a skirt is both practical AND comfortable. I ALWAYS wear a skirt for long-distance drives (avoids bunching in the crotch). I also think a skirt looks better than most pants or shorts (at least the ones I own), and that counts for a lot, too.
Sorry I couldn’t vote or see results here.
I’m sorry to hear that you couldn’t vote. That’s odd. Can you try again? I’ll look and see if I can find a reason for why it’s not working.
Thank you for your comment anyway though!
“Always” is not 100% accurate as I can recall three instances in the last four years or so where I wore pants; but for all practical purposes, skirts are my daily wear regardless of where I am. For the most part I am not even tempted to wear pants; skirts being more comfortable except for a few very rare instances. I’m also attempting, not very successfully it seems, to get more men out of the rut of regimented conformity — but hopefully still planting a seed while I’m comfortable and having fun.
That’s really awesome! There are certainly times that a skirt just isn’t practical and where pants make more sense. I primarily wear skirts, but there are times where I’d rather wear pants such as horseback riding or playing drums on a stage.
