This blog post has a very interesting point about how what we call garments affects how and who buys and wears them. A kilt is acceptable for men, but a skirt isn’t even though they are essentially the same thing. They may have different cuts, but so do different types of jeans and yet they are called the same thing.

A skirt is a skirt no matter whether it’s marketed for women or men. Kilts are really more specialized type of skirt and really shouldn’t be called a skirt.
I agree that a skirt is a skirt no matter whom it’s marketed to. The question is just really whether calling it something else would help more men get over the stigma of a “skirt” being a piece of women’s clothing, as silly as that sounds.
