That’s a bit old (2016 survey). Unfortunate perhaps that the survey was focused on (and funded by) a full cross-dressing vendor, as the focus here has always been on normalizing skirts and such garb for men who are not trying to pass as women. Still interesting is the comparison between Brit and US gender identification: both fascinating and unsurprising. Thanks.
I have to agree with you. As a scientist, my BS monitor went up when they didn’t actually link to the study. And yes, the fact it was a study commissioned by a cross dressing store is likely adding a lot of bias as evidence by 15% buying for drag.
That said, it begs the question of how honest men would be. By far, the most common reaction I get from men when I wear a kilt/kilt like skirt is “I wish I had the courage to wear one”. Which is crazy because for the gender that’s supposed to be so tough, we wuss out when it comes to the strips of cloth we cover ourselves with.
So unless you’ve already gone down the rabbit hole of openly wearing anything from the women’s aisles, I fear a man wouldn’t even answer an anonymous questionnaire honestly.
I also think many men haven’t even given it a moments thought. Which isn’t necessarily an indictment of gender norms but more it’s just isnt something we tend to think about when it was never an option. Like I can say I’ve never thought about wearing a bra cause I’ve never had the need to and it’s not like they’re otherwise functional to men.
All of this is to say how important it is for us to go out and confidently wear skirts as men. There’s no label for guys who wear skirts as guys because it’s never been a “thing”. It’s starting to, but I think most people haven’t seen a man wearing a skirt as a man that wasn’t a joke or a costume. And they need to.
I harbor no fantasy that most men will start wearing a skirt in my lifetime. Given the comfort level of a skirt versus pants, I believe they should but I also know the power of the man card. But I’d make a bet that the men who do wear skirts won’t be a novelty in ten years.
