Today’s “In The Media” post is a bit unusual in that it is about a book I recently stumbled upon. This is a children’s book about a boy who likes to wear skirts. The book is called Felix’s New Skirt. It is written by Kerstin Brichzin and illustrated by Igor Kuprin. This is the summary as copied from GoodReads:
Felix likes to wear skirts. He thinks they’re fun—plus he likes the way his legs move in them. His family doesn’t mind, but that’s not the case for Felix’s classmates. Their merciless teasing makes him want to give up school for good. Can Felix’s parents come up with a way to validate Felix’s expression, while also teaching the other children a lesson in acceptance? A timely picture book that tackles themes of empathy and tolerance in a world where it’s tough to be different.

I haven’t purchased the book, but will do so soon. If anyone has seen it or read it, let us know what you think about it! I may do a full review once I get it if there is some interest in that.

Good for Felix. And points for the author for this fine work of acceptance.
I agree!
Another one: The Boy in the dress – David Williams
Thank you for the suggestion! I will take a look at it!
A comment from one of the reviews on Goodreads,
“When Felix does get to wear his skirt to school, he’s the happiest he’s been”.
Well, of course: it’s all in his name. .
You’re definitely right about that. 🙂
Good that there are writers around not afraid of telling such story (although, let’s be real – it is definitely easier to write a book for early-primary-school children as they have not learnt yet this social bias to uncommon things especially for men), but I can’t imagine any teacher here where I exist to read that book in front of class – too many angry parents that probably wouldn’t hit a road sign while complaining about the sexual depravity and things like that.
I agree! I don’t think most teachers would dare read something like that in front of their students, unfortunately, but it would certainly be a good thing to do in my opinion!
