Summer break is coming to an end. My son’s daycare has been closed for the past four weeks and so there has been ample opportunity for family time. He has gotten to enjoy all sorts of summer activities such as playgrounds, lakes and pools for the very first time in his life. Last summer he was still an infant and obviously couldn’t partake in any of those activities yet.
That said, it is also the reason why I haven’t had a lot of time for blogging. In fact, I haven’t had a lot of time for anything other than family-related activities. I’ve certainly enjoyed it, but am also looking forward to having some more time to write and pursue my other hobbies.
Some of you might be wondering what all of this has to do with skirts. Well, this summer, I have worn skirts out in public more than any other time in my life. I’ve worn them to the grocery store, to the playground, to the lake, when out for drives and walks, when visiting my mother-in-law, on the train, to the optometrist, etc.
Essentially, I’ve worn them practically everywhere I’ve gone. Occasionally, I’ve fallen back on my “safety blanket skirts” when I wasn’t feeling particularly confident or felt the need to be a bit more conservative in my mode of dressing (i.e. at my mother-in-law’s), but generally, I’ve enjoyed the freedom that wearing skirts has given me this summer.
It is incredibly liberating to finally just wear them out and not feel the need to hide inside the safety of my home while wearing them. That is what this summer has been about for me: freedom. I’ve worn skirts for several years now, but this is the first summer I’ve really embraced wearing them more or less full-time out in public.
Now that the beskirted cat is out of the bag, there is no going back. If we ever run into each other on the street or in the store, chances are I’ll be wearing a skirt.
What a cool reflection on your summer and a milestone accomplishment. BRAVO!
In about three weeks I will have completed a full year of wearing a kilt every day. Well, there were four exceptions to that claim – when I was doing some exceptionally dirty/unpleasant yard work and/or working on a ladder.
The year started when we embarked on a long road trip last September. I had long realized that a kilt was much more comfortable than garments with an inseam for long stretches of driving. So, I started off with a kilt on day one and made it 22 of 23 days on the road with a kilt. We will soon be leaving on another (similar) road trip and plan to take kilts and maybe one pair of shorts and/or jeans – just in case…
Thank you!
Congratulations on successfully wearing a kilt every day for a year! That is quite the accomplishment! I definitely agree with you that inseams are very uncomfortable for long stretches of driving. I infinitely prefer something without them!
Kudos to you Alex, I also spent whole summer wearing skirts (aside from these football games) and haven’t been bothered (positively / negatively) by anyone, although I go for pleated skirts mainly. Now let’s see if we’ll ever get any “skirt crisis” as you explained some time ago in one article about leaving skirts in shelves for some time.
That’s great news! It’s awesome that you’ve been able to wear skirts all summer without being bothered by anyone. It seems like the time is really perfect for men to get out there in skirts and normalize it!
We need to have more people/companies making and selling skirts for men, when I brought my first couple (on line) I found sizing a little confusing but soon worked it out.Now go for UK 14/16.I think if they are seen for sale more society will accept men in skirts more,Male or Female you should be able to wear what you want without fear of negativity.
I agree! The more that skirts are marketed to men, the more acceptance they will have. They need to specifically be marketed to men for it to really have an effect. “Unisex” skirts are great, but won’t have the larger effect unfortunately.
Delighted to have found this site for many reasons, not least of which because you write so well. There were moments 20-30 years ago when designers like Gaultier would put men in skirts in runway shows, and one reasonably thought “this time it’s going to catch on”—meaning in six months you’d see the look on maybe 1 out of 100 guys on the street in trendsetting cities. But each time it never hit critical mass.
But it’s high time now, and guys like you are the advance team. Seems like I’m more of a second-wave kind of guy, but baby I’m more than ready to make leggings and skirts my go-tos. I’m much more courageous when I travel, when I can experiment with wearing women’s tights, nail polish and skirts in bars, restaurants, hotels, and airports. You are inspiring me to take the next leap and adopt some of these looks in everyday life. Keep up the awesome work!!
Thank you so much! I absolutely agree that it’s high time for men in skirts to become more mainstream! I’ve pretty much adopted skirts with tights or leggings in cold weather full time now and absolutely love it. I can only recommend it!
